Work in Progress: Custom Water Treatment Plant for a Tobacco Company

One of our current projects comprise of the design, manufacturing, and commissioning of a containerized water treatment plant for a tobacco company.

Mock Design of Water Treatment plant for Tobacco companies

Having completed the design, the team at Water Purification Solutions (WPS) is currently busy manufacturing a containerized water treatment plant that treats borehole water for an international tobacco company based in Malawi.

The tobacco company requires a large volume of potable water for tobacco processing, but lack a source of water that delivers a sufficient quantity of consistently high-quality water. Although they have a borehole on their premises, they cannot use the borehole water because of its brackish nature.

This obstacle gave rise to a need for purification of the groundwater from the borehole.

In response to this challenge, the company required a custom-made water treatment plant to treat the water up to a potable standard. We were selected as the manufacturer of this water treatment plant.

Tobacco Plant Water Treatment Design Phase

Based on the water analysis provided, we deduced that the main points of concern regarding the water quality was:

  • Alkalinity

  • Turbidity

  • Total dissolved solids

  • High levels of iron, sodium, chloride, calcium, and magnesium

With these factors in mind, we designed a water treatment system that would address all these concerns. The proposed design incorporated the following technologies: disc filtration, media filtration, and reverse osmosis.

See a breakdown of the different stages of treatment below:

Pre-treatment: This stage comprises of coagulation and flocculation, and will assist in the efficient removal of dissolved metals and organics.

Screening: An AZUD AA DLP disc filter is to be used as a screen to filter particles down to 50μm. Decreasing the pH will minimise the scaling potential of the membranes.

Filtration: Glass filter media will assist in the removal of metals from the water and granular activated carbon will absorb dissolved constituents. Lastly, bag filtration is incorporated for removal of particles above a size of 5 micron.

Gas Filters

Reverse osmosis (RO): RO technology is used for the removal of dissolved ionic species. The RO unit has been designed to operate at a recovery rate of 80%.

Post-treatment: Sodium hypochlorite dosing will keep biological growth at bay through to point of use. Sodium hydroxide dosing will reduce any corrosive behaviour of the water.
